Psychiatric Hospitals

Depending on the nature and severity of the addiction, an individual may be best served by admission into a psychiatric hospital. While psychiatric hospitals offer many of the same treatment programs and therapies as are employed in other rehabilitation centers and facilities, they do have a few additional advantages.

The most important advantage is access to medical care. This is especially important during the detoxification process, where medication may be required to help the patient end physical dependence. In addition, some individuals will experience greater success if therapy involves the administering of medications – something that a rehabilitation facility may have difficulty providing.

A good psychiatric hospital will be able to develop a program that addresses all the needs of the patient, including behavioral therapy, cognitive therapy, individual, group, and family counseling, and strong aftercare programs. Psychiatric hospitals do not build treatment programs around the dispensing of medications, but rather are able to use them as an additional tool should they be required.
