Christian Drug Rehabilitation

Christian, and all faith based drug rehabilitation centers, use the same methods and therapies as other rehabilitation programs, including:

  • Detox – under a doctor’s care
  • Group Therapy
  • Individual Counseling
  • Cognitive Behavior Therapy

The procedures are also similar. The first step is detoxification to rid the body of addictive substances. Then a treatment program is developed to meet the needs of the individual to give him or her skills necessary to live a clean and sober life. The length of stay depends on the individual. Outpatient treatment is also available.

The Christian Focus

The significant difference is that these treatment facilities center everything on Christian principles, faith, and ethics: applying God’s word and the teachings of Jesus, in order to come to terms with, and overcome, the destructive behaviors brought on by addiction. Patients are in groups with other Christian addicts, all of whom are struggling with the same issues. The doctors and licensed therapists all have a Christian focus as well. Christian rehabilitation treatment facilities have a number of configurations: multi-groupings, age specific, peer based, and gender specific, to name a few.

In addition to traditional therapy methodology, Christian programs also include faith-based programs, including Bible study and discussion and, in particular, prayer therapy. Prayer is incorporated at the beginning of detox and continues through the entire program. The belief in the power of prayer and its role in coping with not only the struggles of addiction but also with the problems that beset all people is of paramount importance. Prayer and scriptural passages are offered and read in every setting.

On-site church and chapel services are also available, and patients are encouraged to attend and use this support system. The freedom to be able to pray in private, worship in community, or confide in a priest or minister is some of the more therapeutic activities in which someone can participate.

In the Christian focus, the crux of the therapy approach is to bring the patient to the realization that they are still loved by God, and that their offences will be forgiven. This understanding provides the foundation for successful re-entry into a sober society.
