shutterstock_92613586According to the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, nearly 30% of Americans have high blood pressure, which is a major risk factor for many serious health conditions such as heart disease, stroke and weight-related illnesses.

WebMD says about 26% of Americans said they had high blood pressure, or hypertension, in 2005, and more than 28% reported the condition 2009. Of the study’s participants who said they had high blood pressure in 2009, only 62% were using medication to control it!

So what contributes to high blood pressure? Here’s a few factors:

  • Family history
  • Poor diet
  • Lack of physical activity
  • Substance use/abuse
  • Being obese or overweight
  • Smoking
  • High salt/fat intake

Accumulation of fat around the stomach causes a host of health problems that can lead to heart disease, including hardened arteries and high blood pressure. If we can reduce abdominal fat, we can reduce inflammation and therefore reduce disease.
