Process Addictions
There are many addictive behaviors many of us exhibit that may seem harmless and amusing. We all have the quirks, the habits, and the things that make us who we are. But when these habits begin taking over our lives so that we can focus on little else, we may have a problem. Process addictions are more and more common these days, and many people continue in this kind of addiction without getting help.
For example, some people spend hours on Facebook or other Internet sites, others shop till they drop, and still others spend too much time in the tanning bed. We may spend more time than others playing video games, or obsessively clean our house, or maybe we always have our minds on the next time we can go to the gym to work out.
Description of Process Addiction
Process addictions are activities that may otherwise be harmless, but when done to excess, can be as dangerous as drug abuse or alcoholism. At times, process addictions need professional help and counseling to help the person lead a normal life again.
How do we know if we are just a little quirky, or if what we are doing is heading down a path of addiction? First of all, we should consider the motto: everything in moderation. If we can tell that our life is out of balance because we are taking something to the extreme, we should work to get things evened out again. A process addiction is evident when the activity keeps us from doing things that are normally important in our life, or occupies a great amount of our time and energy. Someone, for example, who can’t pull themselves away from the casino to get to work or to take care of their kids, should probably look into process addictions to see if they meet the criteria. There are evaluations that are typically used to determine a drug or alcohol addiction that can be applied to process addictions as well. These quizzes can be found on various websites and can be applied to a variety of activities.
Help for Addiction
It may be that we are losing our focus in life. These addictions too often creep up and take over lives, so that many people are imprisoned by what might seem like a harmless process. It is important to get help if necessary before an activity becomes an obsession. The best chance for a swift recovery is to get help when we first notice a problem.
We may feel silly for seeking treatment for shopping too much, or brushing our teeth a ridiculous amount of times each day, but process addiction is a real problem today that many people can’t find their way out of. Find a facility you trust to help you get past an addiction and start focusing on the things that really matter in your life.
