Ketamine (Special K)

What is Ketamine?

Another of the ‘club drugs” Ketamine (also known as Special K or Vitamin K) is a dissociative anesthetic, whose primary use is in veterinary medicine. It distorts sight and sound perceptions and induces feelings of detachment from the self and the environment, similar to the effects of PCP. It is most commonly snorted or injected (intramuscularly). While low doses impair attention, learning ability, and memory, higher doses can cause dreamlike states and hallucinations. At highest dosages, ketamine can impair motor skills, induce delirium and amnesia, and result in potentially fatal respiratory problems.

Some abusers of ketamine have exhibited behavior that is similar to that seen in some cocaine- or amphetamine-dependent individuals. Ketamine users can develop signs of tolerance, cravings for the drug, and withdrawal symptoms.
